Welcome
The implementation of the Environment Agencies National Trout and Grayling Strategy has begun with a switch of trout species that will be completed in 2013. By which time Esthwaite Water will become an all Brown Trout fishery. The shift from rainbows to browns is a gradual one and was initiated last year, with 25% of the total stock being Brown Trout. On reflection, things look promising. Not only have the stocked Brown Trout fed just as vorasiously as the rainbows, but the growth rate once stocked has been phenominal, with many fish in the 3-6lb bracket putting in an appearance towards the back end of last year. By 2013 Esthwaite Water will contain a good size range, as historically the lake has produced Brown Trout well into double figures.
The current recession, increasing fuel prices and the rising cost of living is affecting peoples budgets nationwide. As a way of encouraging anglers to the fishery and retaining them within the sport, we have lowered our prices across the board for the 2012 season. Also as a new initiative, we are able to offer our customers a catch and release ticket option for those that are not in a position to retain fish.
For the competition angler, we will be hosting a new individuals fly fishing match for 2012. This has been brought about by customer request and will compliment our existing and highly successful Open Pairs competition.
With the first stocking of the season taking place on March 1st and a good head of over wintered fish to boot, prospects for the year are looking very good. Tightlines to all our customers for the forthcoming season! |
Brownies to be retained
Esthwaite Water will become a Brown Trout only water by 2013 and the 2012 season will see the last stockings of Rainbow Trout into the fishery.
Due to the increased stocking of Brown Trout into the lake, it will be permissable to retain the brownies as well as the rainbows as part of the bag limit from this season onwards! |
Retired Tutor
One of Esthwaite's long serving tutors retired last year, after over a decade of service to the fishery. Patrick Arnold from nearby Kirby in Furness decided to take life a bit easier and has stepped down from his position, so he can spend more quality time with his partner Gill. All the staff at the fishery wish him the best of luck and are indebted to the efforts that he put in over the years. He will continue to teach and guide, albeit on a much smaller scale.

Kayak Grand Slam
The inaugural Esthwaite Kayak Grand Slam was held in October last year. The event was a resounding success with competitors having to catch a Trout, a Perch and a Pike. The largest total length of all 3 species would be declared the grand slam winner. This was a fantastic competition, which gave the kayaking community the chance to meet like minded anglers and enjoy the superb camerarderie which was experienced throughout the event.
The competition is now firmly established on Esthwaite's events calendar and anyone wishing to fish it next year should contact the fishery for more details. |
Peregrine's Flying

However the highlight of last years efforts was Alistair Beaumont and Dave Morris who fished the National final at Grafham and finished 6th and 13th respectively.
